Activities and Things to do in Whangarei

There are many interesting and unique activities and attractions to see and do while you are visiting Whangarei.


Mair Park, near Aaron Court Motel, is an extensive forest reserve with bush walks, riverside picnic areas and a children's playground. Whangarei Falls is a great place for a family picnic with a swimming hole and lovely walkways. The Falls are known as the most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand. In adjoining AH Reed Kauri Park, the children can hug ancient kauri trees from the wonderful tree-top boardwalk. These three parks are joined by a walkway that also leads on to the Town Basin.

Town Basin Marina, Quayside is packed with fun for the whole family. Centrally located in the heart of the city, the marina is a stunning haven for international yachts. While you are there, check out Claphams Clocks – the National Clock Museum, Burning Issues Gallery – craft gallery and live glass-blowing studio, Fudge Farm Café for hand-made local fudge, Town Basin Hire – try out the unique Orca Drive Aqua Cycle experience also kayaks, rowing skiffs, roller blades and scooters. Relax at one of the family-friendly cafés and restaurants while the children enjoy the playground and giant chess board.

For a gentle cruise that focuses on history try Captain Percys Historic River Cruises along the Ngunguru River.
