Things to Do in Whangarei

Walkways
Mair Park, near Aaron Court Motel, is an extensive forest reserve with bush walks, river-side picnic areas and a children’s playground. Whangarei Falls is a great place for a family picnic with a swimming hole & lovely walkways. The Falls are known as the most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand. In adjoining AH Reed Kauri Park, the children can hug ancient kauri trees from the wonderful tree-top boardwalk. These three parks are joined by a walkway that also leads on to the Town Basin.

Town Basin
Town Basin Marina, Quayside is packed with fun for the whole family. Centrally located in the heart of the city, the marina is a stunning haven for international yachts. While you are there, check out Claphams Clocks - the National Clock Museum, Burning Issues Gallery - craft gallery and live glass-blowing studio, Fudge Farm Café for hand-made local fudge, Town Basin Hire - try out the unique Orca Drive Aqa-cykle experience also kayaks, rowing skiffs, roller blades and scooters. Relax at one of the family friendly cafés and restaurants while the children enjoy the playground and giant chess board.

Animals
- Zion Wildlife Gardens is unique in New Zealand and home to the animals of hit TV show The Lion Man. Check out the real thing!
- At the Kiwi North, the Whangarei Museum, Kiwi House and Heritage Park on State Highway 16, you can see live kiwi, take a train ride and visit the Clarke Homestead. On the special "Live Days" you and the kids can ride on the steam railway, experience bullock & sled rides, and enjoy other activities of a bygone era. This is also the location of the Native Bird Recovery Centre.

Cruises & Tours

- Explore the Poor Knights Marine Reserve with a day cruise from Tutukaka on “A Perfect Day” - includes lunch, snorkelling and kayaking
